요즘 나름 듀오링고는 꾸준히 하는데
블로그 관리를 안하게 되니
자연스럽게 접근을 안하게 된다ㅠㅠ

She looked carefully at everything on the table.

look at : ~을 보다(살피다)(=examine)
carefully : 주의하여, 조심스럽게, 신중히; 정성 들여서; 검소하게

그녀는 테이블 위 모든 것을 신중히 살펴봤다.


There were three plates, so Marilla must have been expecting a visitor to come home with Matthew.

must have been : ~임에 틀림없다.

3개의 접시가 있으니 마릴라는 매튜와 함께 집으로 오는 손님을 기다리는게 틀림없다.


But the dishes were everyday dishes and the cake was plain,
so expected visitor could not be anybody too important.

하지만 그 접시들은 매일 쓰는 접시들이었고
케이크도 평범하므로 기다리는 손님은 중요한 사람일리 없었다.


"Good evening, Rachel," Marilla greeted Mrs. Lynde.

마릴라는 "좋은 저녁이에요, 레이첼."이라며 린데 부인을 맞이했다.


"This is a lovely evening, isn't it? Won't you sit down? How are you?"

멋진 저녁이지 않나요? 앉으시겠어요? 잘 지내시죠?


Marilla was tall and thin.

마릴라는 크고 말랐다.


Even though she looked stern, she did have a sense of humor.

even though : 비록 …일지라도, 설사 …이라고 할지라도
a sense of humor : 유머 감각

비록 그녀가 근엄해보이지만 유머 감각을 갖고 있었다.


"We're well," said Mrs. Lynde.

"우리는 잘 지내요" 린데 부인이 말했다.


"Though I thought you weren't well when I saw Matthew in the buggy today."

"제 생각이기는 하지만 내가 오늘 마차를 탄 매튜를 봤을 때 당신은 잘 못지내는 것 같아요."


Marilla had expected Mrs. Lynde to visit because Mrs. Lynde was a curious person.

마릴라는 린데 부인이 호기심이 많은 사람이기 때문에 방문했을 것이라 예상했다.


"Mattuew went to Bright River," Marilla said.

"매튜는 브라이트 리버에 갔어요." 마릴라는 말했다.


"We're getting a little boy from an orphanage, and he's coming on the train tonight."

"우리는 고아원에서 작은 남자아이를 데려오려고 오늘 그가 기차역에 갔다오는 거에요."

If Marilla had said that Matthew had gone to meet a kangaroo from Australia,
Mrs. Lynde could not be more surprised.

린데 부인은 만약 마릴라가 매튜는 캥거루를 만나러 호주에 갔다고 했대도 이보다 더 놀라지 않을 것이다.


She actually stopped talking for five seconds.

그녀는 실제로 5초 동안 말을 멈췄다.


"Why on earth would you do that?" she asked disapprovingly.

why on earth : 도대체 왜
disapprovingly : 불찬성의 뜻을 나타내어; 비난하여, 불만을 나타내어.

"도대체 왜 당신이 그렇게 하는거죠?" 그녀가 못마땅하다는 듯이 물었다.


"We've been thinking about it for some time . . . all winter, in fact," replied Marilla.

"우리는 얼마 동안 그 부분에 대해 생각해왔어요... 사실 겨울마다요." 마릴라가 답했다.


"Matthew is growing older. He's sixty, and his heart is not so good.
It's difficult to hire someone to do farm work."

grow old : 차차 나이들다

"매튜는 점점 나이를 먹고 있어요. 그는 60세고 그의 심장은 좋지 않죠.
농장 일을 위해 누군가를 고용하는건 어려워요."
